AWS Serverless Geospatial Processing¶
Objective: Build scalable, cost-effective geospatial processing pipelines using AWS serverless services.
Serverless architecture eliminates infrastructure management while providing automatic scaling and pay-per-use pricing. This guide covers building production-ready geospatial processing systems on AWS.
1) Serverless Architecture Patterns¶
Lambda-Based Processing¶
import json
import boto3
from shapely.geometry import shape
import geopandas as gpd
def lambda_handler(event, context):
"""Process geospatial data with Lambda"""
s3 = boto3.client('s3')
# Extract from event
bucket = event['Records'][0]['s3']['bucket']['name']
key = event['Records'][0]['s3']['object']['key']
# Process geospatial data
result = process_geospatial_data(bucket, key)
return {
'statusCode': 200,
'body': json.dumps(result)
}
def process_geospatial_data(bucket, key):
"""Process geospatial data from S3"""
s3 = boto3.client('s3')
# Download and process
obj = s3.get_object(Bucket=bucket, Key=key)
gdf = gpd.read_file(obj['Body'])
# Apply transformations
gdf = gdf.to_crs('EPSG:3857')
gdf['area'] = gdf.geometry.area
# Upload results
output_key = f"processed/{key}"
s3.put_object(
Bucket=bucket,
Key=output_key,
Body=gdf.to_parquet()
)
return {'processed': len(gdf)}
Why: Lambda provides automatic scaling, pay-per-execution pricing, and eliminates server management overhead for geospatial processing workloads.
Step Functions Orchestration¶
# Step Functions state machine definition
step_functions_definition = {
"Comment": "Geospatial Processing Pipeline",
"StartAt": "ValidateInput",
"States": {
"ValidateInput": {
"Type": "Task",
"Resource": "arn:aws:lambda:region:account:function:validate-input",
"Next": "ProcessGeometry"
},
"ProcessGeometry": {
"Type": "Task",
"Resource": "arn:aws:lambda:region:account:function:process-geometry",
"Next": "GenerateStatistics"
},
"GenerateStatistics": {
"Type": "Task",
"Resource": "arn:aws:lambda:region:account:function:generate-stats",
"End": True
}
}
}
Why: Step Functions provide reliable orchestration with built-in error handling, retries, and parallel execution for complex geospatial workflows.
2) Data Lake Architecture¶
S3 Storage Patterns¶
# S3 data lake structure
data_lake_structure = {
"raw/": {
"description": "Original data from sources",
"retention": "7 years",
"storage_class": "STANDARD_IA"
},
"processed/": {
"description": "Cleaned and transformed data",
"retention": "3 years",
"storage_class": "STANDARD"
},
"analytics/": {
"description": "Analytical datasets",
"retention": "1 year",
"storage_class": "STANDARD"
}
}
# Lifecycle policy
lifecycle_policy = {
"Rules": [
{
"ID": "GeospatialDataLifecycle",
"Status": "Enabled",
"Transitions": [
{
"Days": 30,
"StorageClass": "STANDARD_IA"
},
{
"Days": 90,
"StorageClass": "GLACIER"
}
]
}
]
}
Why: Structured data lake enables efficient data discovery, cost optimization through lifecycle policies, and supports multiple analytical use cases.
Parquet Optimization¶
# Optimize Parquet files for serverless processing
def optimize_parquet_for_serverless(gdf, target_size_mb=128):
"""Optimize GeoParquet for serverless processing"""
# Calculate optimal row group size
current_size = gdf.memory_usage(deep=True).sum() / 1024 / 1024
row_groups = max(1, int(current_size / target_size_mb))
rows_per_group = len(gdf) // row_groups
# Write optimized Parquet
gdf.to_parquet(
'optimized.parquet',
engine='pyarrow',
compression='snappy',
row_group_size=rows_per_group
)
Why: Optimized Parquet files reduce Lambda execution time and memory usage, improving performance and reducing costs.
3) Event-Driven Processing¶
S3 Event Triggers¶
# S3 event configuration
s3_event_config = {
"LambdaConfigurations": [
{
"Id": "GeospatialProcessing",
"LambdaFunctionArn": "arn:aws:lambda:region:account:function:process-geospatial",
"Events": ["s3:ObjectCreated:*"],
"Filter": {
"Key": {
"FilterRules": [
{
"Name": "suffix",
"Value": ".geojson"
}
]
}
}
}
]
}
Why: Event-driven processing ensures immediate response to new data while maintaining loose coupling between components.
SQS Message Queues¶
import boto3
import json
def process_geospatial_queue():
"""Process geospatial messages from SQS"""
sqs = boto3.client('sqs')
# Receive messages
response = sqs.receive_message(
QueueUrl='https://sqs.region.amazonaws.com/account/geospatial-queue',
MaxNumberOfMessages=10,
WaitTimeSeconds=20
)
for message in response.get('Messages', []):
try:
# Process message
body = json.loads(message['Body'])
result = process_geospatial_data(body)
# Delete message on success
sqs.delete_message(
QueueUrl='https://sqs.region.amazonaws.com/account/geospatial-queue',
ReceiptHandle=message['ReceiptHandle']
)
except Exception as e:
print(f"Error processing message: {e}")
Why: SQS provides reliable message delivery, dead letter queues for error handling, and enables decoupled processing architectures.
4) Performance Optimization¶
Lambda Optimization¶
# Lambda optimization techniques
def optimize_lambda_for_geospatial():
"""Optimize Lambda for geospatial processing"""
# Use provisioned concurrency for consistent performance
provisioned_config = {
"FunctionName": "geospatial-processor",
"ProvisionedConcurrencyConfig": {
"ProvisionedConcurrencyUnits": 10
}
}
# Optimize memory allocation
memory_config = {
"FunctionName": "geospatial-processor",
"MemorySize": 3008, # Maximum for geospatial processing
"Timeout": 900 # 15 minutes for complex operations
}
Why: Proper Lambda configuration ensures consistent performance for geospatial processing workloads while optimizing costs.
Caching Strategies¶
# Implement caching for geospatial data
import redis
import json
def cache_geospatial_result(key, data, ttl=3600):
"""Cache geospatial processing results"""
redis_client = redis.Redis(
host='your-elasticache-endpoint',
port=6379,
decode_responses=True
)
# Serialize geospatial data
serialized_data = json.dumps(data, default=str)
# Cache with TTL
redis_client.setex(key, ttl, serialized_data)
def get_cached_result(key):
"""Retrieve cached geospatial result"""
redis_client = redis.Redis(
host='your-elasticache-endpoint',
port=6379,
decode_responses=True
)
cached_data = redis_client.get(key)
if cached_data:
return json.loads(cached_data)
return None
Why: Caching reduces redundant processing and improves response times for frequently accessed geospatial data.
5) Monitoring and Observability¶
CloudWatch Integration¶
import boto3
import time
def log_geospatial_metrics(operation, duration, record_count):
"""Log custom metrics to CloudWatch"""
cloudwatch = boto3.client('cloudwatch')
cloudwatch.put_metric_data(
Namespace='GeospatialProcessing',
MetricData=[
{
'MetricName': 'ProcessingDuration',
'Value': duration,
'Unit': 'Seconds',
'Dimensions': [
{
'Name': 'Operation',
'Value': operation
}
]
},
{
'MetricName': 'RecordsProcessed',
'Value': record_count,
'Unit': 'Count',
'Dimensions': [
{
'Name': 'Operation',
'Value': operation
}
]
}
]
)
Why: Custom metrics provide visibility into geospatial processing performance and enable proactive optimization.
Error Handling and Alerting¶
# CloudWatch alarms for geospatial processing
alarm_config = {
"AlarmName": "GeospatialProcessingErrors",
"ComparisonOperator": "GreaterThanThreshold",
"EvaluationPeriods": 2,
"MetricName": "Errors",
"Namespace": "AWS/Lambda",
"Period": 300,
"Statistic": "Sum",
"Threshold": 5.0,
"ActionsEnabled": True,
"AlarmActions": [
"arn:aws:sns:region:account:geospatial-alerts"
]
}
Why: Proactive monitoring and alerting ensure geospatial processing pipelines remain reliable and performant.
6) Security Best Practices¶
IAM Policies¶
# Least privilege IAM policy for geospatial processing
geospatial_lambda_policy = {
"Version": "2012-10-17",
"Statement": [
{
"Effect": "Allow",
"Action": [
"s3:GetObject",
"s3:PutObject"
],
"Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::geospatial-data-lake/*"
},
{
"Effect": "Allow",
"Action": [
"logs:CreateLogGroup",
"logs:CreateLogStream",
"logs:PutLogEvents"
],
"Resource": "arn:aws:logs:*:*:*"
}
]
}
Why: Least privilege access minimizes security risks while enabling necessary geospatial processing operations.
Data Encryption¶
# Enable encryption for geospatial data
encryption_config = {
"Rules": [
{
"ApplyServerSideEncryptionByDefault": {
"SSEAlgorithm": "AES256"
}
}
]
}
# KMS encryption for sensitive data
kms_encryption_config = {
"Rules": [
{
"ApplyServerSideEncryptionByDefault": {
"SSEAlgorithm": "aws:kms",
"KMSMasterKeyID": "arn:aws:kms:region:account:key/key-id"
}
}
]
}
Why: Encryption protects sensitive geospatial data at rest and in transit, ensuring compliance with security requirements.
7) Cost Optimization¶
Lambda Cost Optimization¶
# Optimize Lambda costs
def optimize_lambda_costs():
"""Optimize Lambda costs for geospatial processing"""
# Use appropriate memory allocation
memory_optimization = {
"low_memory": 512, # For simple operations
"medium_memory": 1024, # For standard processing
"high_memory": 3008 # For complex geospatial operations
}
# Implement request batching
batch_config = {
"BatchSize": 10,
"MaximumBatchingWindowInSeconds": 5
}
Why: Proper memory allocation and request batching optimize Lambda costs while maintaining performance.
S3 Cost Optimization¶
# S3 cost optimization strategies
cost_optimization = {
"storage_classes": {
"frequent_access": "STANDARD",
"infrequent_access": "STANDARD_IA",
"archive": "GLACIER",
"deep_archive": "DEEP_ARCHIVE"
},
"lifecycle_policies": {
"transition_days": {
"to_ia": 30,
"to_glacier": 90,
"to_deep_archive": 365
}
}
}
Why: Intelligent storage class selection and lifecycle policies significantly reduce S3 costs for geospatial data.
8) TL;DR Quickstart¶
# 1. Create Lambda function for geospatial processing
def lambda_handler(event, context):
# Process geospatial data
result = process_geospatial_data(event)
return result
# 2. Configure S3 event trigger
s3_event = {
"LambdaConfigurations": [{
"LambdaFunctionArn": "arn:aws:lambda:region:account:function:process-geospatial",
"Events": ["s3:ObjectCreated:*"]
}]
}
# 3. Set up monitoring
cloudwatch_alarms = {
"error_rate": {"threshold": 5},
"duration": {"threshold": 300}
}
# 4. Optimize costs
cost_optimization = {
"memory": 1024,
"timeout": 300,
"storage_class": "STANDARD_IA"
}
9) Anti-Patterns to Avoid¶

- Don't ignore memory allocationβgeospatial processing is memory-intensive
- Don't skip error handlingβimplement dead letter queues and retries
- Don't ignore cost optimizationβuse appropriate storage classes and lifecycle policies
- Don't skip monitoringβimplement comprehensive observability
Why: These anti-patterns lead to performance issues, cost overruns, and reliability problems in production environments.
This guide provides the foundation for building production-ready serverless geospatial processing systems on AWS.
